Great Day of Soccer
Exercises

Following is a detailed explanation of each of the skills that the kids will be competing in. Please make an effort to go over the skills with the children during practice prior to Great Day.  Click Here for a downloadable (.pdf) version of this page.


Exercise #1 Throw In for Distance and Accuracy

This skill is designed to test your ability to throw in the ball for distance and accuracy. In accordance with FIFA rules (regarding throw-in) each participant will take two throws with the best one used for score.SCORE: 1 point for each foot

-Player may step on the line but not over the line. Be sure to use the line, not the point of the "V"
-Ball must come over the top of player’s head
-Both feet must be touching the ground when ball is thrown


Exercise #2 Long Distance (Corner) Kick

The long distance kick is designed to develop young player’s proficiency in the "Corner Kick". The score is determined by the distance kicked in the air to the first bounce point. The ball must rest on line prior to kick. Two kicks with the best one used for score.

SCORE: 1 point for each foot.

In both Exercise #1 and #2

    • Ball must land on or inside "V" lines to be good. Any part of ball landing on the line is good; whole ball landing outside line will be disqualified.
    • Distance will be recorded where ball first touched ground when thrown or kicked. Course is lined every 5 feet.
    • Each player get two tries.
    • Short courses are for U5 to U8 only. All ages may use long courses as angles are the same for both sizes.


Exercise #3 Juggling

Juggling is an important part of the game of soccer. This element of the contest is started by picking up the ball (with hand or foot) and keeping it in the air by juggling with legal (approved by FIFA) body parts. Illegal touch is with any part of arm or hand. Legal touch is with any other part of the body. Participants must stay within circle. Two attempts are allowed, with the best one used for score.SCORE: Total number of touches


Exercise #4 Dribbling

With the ball places on a starting point, the contestant must weave through the five cones making certain no cones are "missed." Two runs are allowed with a missed cone resulting in disqualification for that run.

SCORE: Based on best time.

    • U5 to U8 5 cones placed 8 feet apart with first cone on starting line
    • U10 & up 5 cones placed 14 feet apart with first cone on starting line.
    • Whole ball must start inside box
    • Start watch when ball is first contacted by player
    • Player must weave in and out of all cones going around last cone and return weaving through cones.
    • If a player "misses" a cone he must go back to cone or run is disqualified.
    • There is no penalty for knocking down a cone.
    • Stop watch when ball is stopped inside box with foot

Exercise #5 Goal Kick

This event is designed to test the participant’s ability to kick/pass accurately. The score is determined by the difficulty of the shot in a 45 second time limit. The player gets five shots and there is no penalty for less than 5 shots.

    • U5 to U8 balls are placed 10, 20, & 30ft from net
    • U10 & up balls are placed 18, 36, & 54 ft from net
    • Player gets only one try for each ball
    • If the ball hits the board and continues into net, points are only given for hole where hall entered goal.
    • If balls hits a post and rebounds out no points are awarded for that ball.
    • To be given points for entering the goal, whole ball must pass goal line.
    • Score as follows:
Ball entering middle opening-5points
Ball entering lower corner opening-20 points
Ball entering upper corner opening-40 points
